Jiang Qing, also known as Madame Mao, was a Chinese actress and political figure who was married to Chinese leader Mao Zedong. She played a prominent role in the Cultural Revolution in China and was a member of the Gang of Four, a radical faction within the Communist Party of China.
Jiang Qing was born in 1914 in Zhucheng, Shandong province, China. She started her career as an actress in Shanghai in the 1930s, where she met Mao Zedong. They were married in 1938.
During the Cultural Revolution, Jiang Qing played a leading role in promoting Mao's policies and was influential in the arts and cultural scene in China. She was known for her involvement in the creation of the model operas, which promoted Maoist ideology.
After Mao's death in 1976, Jiang Qing and the other members of the Gang of Four were arrested and tried for crimes against the state. In 1981, she was sentenced to death, but her sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment. Jiang Qing died in prison in 1991.
Jiang Qing remains a controversial figure in Chinese history, with some seeing her as a victim of the political machinations of the time, while others view her as a ruthless and power-hungry individual.
